Teacher, journalist and poet. Mary Elizabeth Barrows was a native of Clayville, N.Y. In April of 1855 she moved to Muscatine, Iowa to teach school. In 1856 she left Iowa for Illinois and then New York. In June of 1857 she returned to Iowa after marrying prominent Muscatine resident Josiah Proctor Walton.
